Publix hard mountain dew8/30/2023 ![]() ![]() "Dude this is just Code Red!" was an instant reaction from the folks who tried it. ![]() The only reason it doesn't get a 10/10 is because they don't call it Code Red. Folks, this is just Code Red with booze in it. But something about the black cherry used in drinks these days doesn't taste right to me. Ironically, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat is one of my favorite beers. Secondly, black cherry is one of my least favorite drink flavors. I thought they should have just done a Code Red flavor of the Hard Dew and call it a day. ![]() Code Red is one of my favorite Dew variants. For starters, Mountain Dew already has a cult favorite "red" flavor called Code Red. I was ready to condemn this flavor before I even cracked it open. I guess my love for watermelon led me towards some bias. I got a lot of nods and shrugs from people saying "yeah, it's good". The friends were very "meh" about this one. I've yet to taste a watermelon flavored product that can replicate that flavor. I love eating watermelon, the mildly sweet and watery flavor always quenches my thirst on a hot day. The watermelon flavor is not too sweet, but still plentiful enough. I was pleasantly relieved to be wrong about my expectations. I thought the Major Melon was overwhelmingly sweet, and my least favorite Mountain Dew variant. This one held some skepticism thanks to the recently released Mountain Dew Major Melon. My friends seemed to enjoy this more than I did. "This is dangerous" was mentioned a couple times inferring that the lack of alcohol taste can sneak up on you after drinking a few of these. The general consensus by my friends was "This is just Mountain Dew". Which is a blessing and a curse at the same time Original Hard Dew meets all expectations. That also may save you from a nightmare hangover. This probably is from the zero sugar and 100 calorie features that come with each flavor. ![]() You immediately get Diet Dew vibes from the taste. Exactly what you'd expect from the original flavor of Mountain Dew. The color glowed like the ooze from Ninja Turtles II. I also shared a few cans of it with some old friends from college who share a love for Mountain Dew. I tried each of the flavors while poolside last weekend. Each individual can photos were also taken from the google ^Not my photo, but a great visual on what each flavor looks like outside the can. So these would need to be chilled before I indulge. I understood why they imposed that limit once I parked the car and watched people walking out of the store in droves carrying out the Hard Dew by the pair. I found an ABC liquors selling it, but at a 2 case max. I didn't even pick up my rental car yet (review on that coming soon!) before I was calling liquor stores to see who was selling this new product. Luckily for me, I was taking a little trip to Florida for a wedding. I knew Ohio wasn't going to be top on their list, so I wasn't too disappointed. Hard Dew officially released to the public on February 22nd in three states: Iowa, Tennessee, and Florida. If I had to guess, they really wanted to nail the formula the first time out. I'm personally not sure why it took this long. With the seltzer craze hitting us harder than Covid did in 2020, it was only a matter of time before sodas (pops, soft drinks, you get it) started to get spiked variants. I've mixed everything from vodka, rum, whiskey, and even tequila with it. Dew was originally made as a whiskey mixer over half a century ago. It's honestly shocking they took this long to put alcohol in Mountain Dew. But a Baja Blast to complement my egregious Taco Bell order hits the spot. Personally, I don't drink a ton of soda (pop or whatever). I've also witnessed friends in college slug it by the gallon. My father was a die hard Dew fan to a point where his username on his accounts was "Dewman823". I've seen both ends of the spectrum in my life. It's either looked down upon or worshipped by the 2-liter. Mountain Dew has a weird reputation by all. ![]()
